By ten-thirty that morning, fifty-one miles north. Billy Lang sat in the bus station at Dunston. Dressed in the Army jacket, glasses and hat, he looked across the waiting room at Maria. Heâd gone out of the hotel at nine, into a J. C. Penney store. There he bought a pale blue dress and a pink sweater, telling the clerk they were presents for his mother. Then heâd gone down the street to a five-and-ten, where heâd bought some toilet articles; heâd stolen a set of hair curlers. He went back to the hotel, where Maria had finished dying her hair. She put her hair up quickly then.
Now they were in the bus station. Maria, the kerchief arranged to show some of the red hair, sat alone in the new dress and sweater. She did not look at him; she sat motionless, hands on her lap. In one of those hands, he knew, was the ticket for San Francisco. In his own hand was a ticket for Oakland. He would, when theyâd traveled far enough north, get his fare changed to San Francisco.
The minutes crept by. A man in a shiny black suit got up and got a cup of chocolate from a vending machine. A baby lying in the lap of a very plump woman suddenly began crying loudly, then stopped just as abruptly. A bus rolled up beside the station. Five passengers stood up and waited until the boarding call was made through a crackling loudspeaker.
Maria got on two people ahead of him and sat down midway through the uncrowded bus, alone. Billy sat down five seats behind her, across the aisle. A hundred miles north, he got up and joined her. She took his hand and held it tightly.
âHowâre you doing?â he asked, grinning reassuringly.
âFine,â she whispered.
âGood,â he said. âWeâre doing it now. Weâre doing it just great.â
